• SoTL:
  The ILTE has a limited number of grants for faculty undertaking SoTL projects.  Funding changes each year and the number of awards granted (and the amounts for each award) is dependent on overall funding.  Specific details will be announced each new academic year.  In addition to the required proposals, an ILTE Grant Request Coversheet must also be completed.

Scholarship of Teaching Learning Research (SoTL)

What is SoTL:

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is a research-driven approach to studying classroom teaching and student learning and sharing it publicly either as a publication or a presentation. Pursuant to federal law and University policy, all research conducted by IUS investigators that involves human subjects must be reviewed and approved by the IUS Institutional Review Board for Protection of Human Subjects in Research (IRB).

Typical SoTL research requires an application to the IRB along with an informed consent form. The table provides examples of when human subjects review is required.

Human subjects issues in SoTL research:

• Dual Roles: Due to the dual roles (instructor/researcher and student/research participant) typical in SoTL research special caution is needed to ensure that the student/research participants do not feel untoward pressure to participate.
  
  
• Third Party: To ensure ethical treatment towards the student/research participant a third party is needed to collect and hold the informed consents until after the course grades have been sent to the registrar's office.
  
  
• ILTE Role: The ILTE office is willing to act as the third party if necessary. The ILTE staff will come to your classroom, deliver the research instructions, collect the informed consent statements, hold the informed consents during the semester and provide the student/research participants with a contact to withdraw from the study if they wish, and once the grades have been filed they will forward the informed consents to you.
